Building work will start next month on an extension at Liverpool John Lennon airport after McLaren Construction was confirmed as main contractor on the job this week.

McLaren's £6m contract includes improving baggage handling facilities and adding extra retail space at the airport.

Construction work airside and landside is due for completion by the end of next summer and is part of a £12m improvement scheme at the airport which will also include upgrading of security equipment to ease passenger bottlenecks.

Manchester architect Leach Rhodes Walker has designed the airport extension which will add an extra 45% of retail space providing a total of 80,000 square feet.

McLaren chairman Kevin Taylor said: "This job fits in with our strategy of winning more work across the north of England."

"The extension to Liverpool John Lennon is a prestigious scheme and we look forward to building this major project which will make a huge difference for the millions of passengers who use the airport every year."

McLaren recently opened an office in Warrington as part of their strategic growth in the north of England.

The firm will also start work next month on a £1m refurbishment scheme at the Spinningfields commercial centre in Manchester for Allied London Properties.

Latest figures posted at Companies House show McLaren made an operating profit of £15.5m on the back of £130m turnover for the year to July 2008.  Turnover this year is expected to hit £160m.
